FC Aarau 2 FC Luzern 4

logo3Sometimes almost all your opportunities ends up in goal. The French calls it ‘realisme’ and FC Luzern had it in Aarau today. Lots of it.

A beautiful sunny afternoon, perfect conditions for football. Aarau, bottom of the table in desperate need of points while Luzern needing a win to reclaim the second place that FC Zurich at least temporary obtained yesterday by beating Grasshoppers.

Luzerns large traveling support was surprisingly quiet, it took a ‘Scheiss Luzern’ chant from the home fans to get them going, but even so the crowd was strangely subdued. Ianu, who left Aarau in the summer after some controversy was constantly whistled by the home fans throughout the game. Though as often times happens players come back and haunt their previous team. That’s exactly what Ianu did, he was behind three goals and scored the fourth, together with Zibung the best player today.

Aarau really wanted this game, they were at least in the first half much more aggressive then Luzern. FCL were in fact lucky not to be one down right from the start, an Aarau cross bounces and seemed to touch Diarra’s hand.

Vescovac slips and loses possession in the 19 minute, giving the Aarau forward a good scoring opportunity. Zibung saves the shot and then sprints towards his defender furious at what happened. No doubt this goalkeeper hates losing and plays with his heart. Poor Vescovac didn’t even dare look him in the eyes.

A few minutes later Aarau attacks again, this time Alain Weiss saves as the last defender. Zibung is commanding in goal, if Aarau lacked ‘realism’ today it was in large part thanks to him.

Then after 35 minutes FC Luzern scores against the run of play, Ianu takes the ball forward right in front of the home fans on the Luzern right side, although he could have a go himself he selflessly chooses to square the ball to Paiva who misses only for Fereirra to send it into the net.

As we are trying to calm down after the goal celebrations it happens again. In what seemed to be a carbon copy of the first goal Ianu again centers the ball and this time Yakin controls it and Paiva scores. We are as lucky this season as we were unlucky in the last.

Just before half time Aarau finally beats Zibung, no one covers the far post and Renggli can only watch when Burki scores. Equally shocking to conceding a goal was the choice of music the speaker put on to celebrate it. Before you know it you will be counting down to the first game of the Challenge League.

Halftime is ended with a giant pyro show from the Luzern fans. Hopefully it won’t be too expensive…

Second half continues much like the first with Finnish international Lehtinien forcing Zibung to make a save with his foot. Soon after Aarau incorrectly gets a penalty after Diarra fouls his attacker just outside the area. Stojkov scores. 2-2. It is hard to see how we are going to turn this around, having coming back from two down Aarau are clearly dominating the game and now playing for a win.

The again Luzern counters, a goal as beautiful as it is undeserved. Ianu and Ferreira combines to put Luzern ahead.

When the Aarau keeper in the last minute runs up to try to force in the ball on a corner what every supporter hopes for happens. The over optimistic goalie doesn’t even get near the ball as its headed away and then sent up field to the waiting Ianu. Ianu turns and then cooly rolls the ball into the net from over 20 meters. Ice hockey goal!

And regarding the experiment? Didn’t work at all. The train was surprisingly empty this time, with Aarau so close seems like lots of people opted for their cars.
