- What is Young Boys?
Young Boys are a football club in Bern. They play at Wankdorf. JCBT finds this funny. The Young Boys of Wankdorf.
Why the silly name?
The story goes that in 1888 four chaps, students at the University of Bern, founded a club. Their first game was against Basel Old Boys and thus chose the name.
What is Bern?
Bern is the capital of Switzerland. It is a city of about 125,000 inhabitants. It is slightly to the west of the middle of the country. The city mascot is the Bear. However if you’re an animal lover it is best not to go and see them.
Are they any good?
Young Boys are known as the chokers of Swiss football. Time and time again they have snatched defeat from the claws of victory, thrown it away when only victory was possible and contrived to lose when winning seemed inevitable. Had they not suffered from this terrible affliction then they would most certainly have more than their 11 league titles. Basically they seem to be made of glass. As the saying goes ‘when the going gets tough, the Young Boy goes home’.
Their most recent example was the end of the 2009-10 season – with two games to go YB came to the Gersag. Win and the title was theirs. Their supporters, there to see a title win, came in numbers. Their bumble-bee colours could be seen in every section of the stadium. They lost 5-1 and went on to the lose the final game against Basel, who won the league.
YB are usually a pretty decent side and are usually there abouts in the European places. We don’t need to mention their tonking of then capitulation against Spurs. Here is a collection of YB jokes.
Where do they play?
At the utterly soul-less Stade de Suisse in Wankdorf, just outside of Bern. The stadium stands on the site of the old Wankdorf Stadium which played host to the Miracle of Bern, the 1954 World Cup final. The stadium was torn down and rebuilt for Euro 2008.
Plastic pitch, plastic stadium – part of a shopping centre and out of town. Not that great a place.
What’s it like to visit?
Bern’s an easy place to visit. Around an hour from Luzern – the stadium station is about 2/3 minutes train ride from Bern main station and the party train usually takes you there. The stadium is a five minute walk from there.
They sell the usual beers and sausage although the beer is often alcohol free. It’s not dissimilar to Basel.

You stumble off the Party Train in a foreign wasteland. As always,
